First Winter Olympics

Close to 300 athletes from 16 countries competed in the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, on January 25, 1924. Those numbers have grown to more than 2,800 athletes from 88 different countries as of the last winter games in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.
