Gandhi's Political Defiance

Mahatma Gandhi was arrested in his ashram on March 10, 1922. The charge was inciting hatred, contempt and antagonizing the government. Gandhi pleaded guilty and asked for the harshest penalty but spent less than two years in prison. He would be jailed several more times over the next three decades. Gandhi promoted non-violent resistance. He became known as the father of India’s independence which was achieved when Britain handed over power to the India subcontinent in 1947.
